Eating just vegetables is going to severely deprive you. You should be eating as many grams of protein as there are pounds in your goal weight (so if you want to weigh 160lbs, you should eat 160g of protein a day). Also if I'm hungry and I drink a can of Diet Coke or whatever that seems to kill the hunger for quite a while. It's one of the few ingredients that has already come from a recipe, so imo it's worth knowing about it and the only way to know about food is to eat it!

again, stressing that all the food i buy, i consider an ingredient, not a thing in itself. so any recipe with cheese will also contain vegetables and vitamins and such. note that cheese is a fantastic source of calcium, though! minerals are important too.

makes you feel crappy, and also makes you crave sugar like a beast. your body is expecting sugar, because of the taste, but because it doesn't actually get any, you end up wanting more. this is a major problem with soda - writer husband quit drinking it recently and his previously out-of-control hunger subsided basically as soon as he'd stopped craving the soda. most - although not all - artificially sweetened things use aspartame as a sweetener which will completely destroy your ability to regulate your own appetite. even if you eat enough, you still feel hungry.

yes! garlic is the BEST thing for a cold - i like making toast with mashed roasted garlic when i'm sick, or if it's the season, bruschetta with loads of garlic, tomatoes and bell peppers. and ginger is THE BEST digestive aid! ginger tea (chopped ginger root boiled in water) is the perfect thing for nausea! that's why they sell ginger gum as a motion sickness reliever. peppermint is also really good if you have trapped gas; i keep peppermint tea in the house for this exact reason. Culture, values and personality can be changed, so the fact that the two can be equated doesn't really alter the content of my point.

Although I would like to clarify that my mention of 'social rules' came up not because I'm saying they aren't relevant in any context, but specifically in the context of there not being a conspiracy/oppression of extroverts against introverts.

TBQH I'm not sure where you're getting the idea that our culture punishes women for being assertive. I'm a woman and I was rewarded with nine bucks and prompt, respectful service for being assertive. Everyone, regardless of personal specifics like gender or nationality, is rewarded for assertiveness because, as I said, it is effective, alpha behavior. I think what you're saying is that men from some subcultures feel insecure and punish assertive women for not wanting to have sex with them, which is honestly the only situation in which women are regularly 'punished' for assertiveness - not that I would consider being disliked by a bunch of beta males to be much of a punishment. ;)Salvatore Hawkinshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01771976209516671180noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2511272831266829283.post-44152368239872449812013-02-03T14:04:42.479-08:002013-02-03T14:04:42.479-08:00I know what you mean - it's strange, having se...I know what you mean - it's strange, having set off on a big adventure, to find oneself in a less storied world. Oh I agree - not all fandoms are cr.../very belated

Oh I agree - not all fandoms are created equal, and larger ones tend to be worse. Not all fandom social spaces are created equal either - panfandom roleplay jamjars seem horribly drama-prone and tending towards ephemera. I put this partly down to the way it divorces 'characters' from canon, which usually robs them of all that ever made them worth writing about; there's rarely anything to do but dialogue and sex, and a lot of people seem to find it HORRIBLY consuming even if they're not deriving enjoyment from it? Idk, it seems to get some people really bad.

I hear you about trending away - variety builds strength, when it comes to any type of writing. Taking a long break from fanfic made me better at it, I'm pretty sure. I feel like writing is a ragbag of different skills and they all get honed at different rates. Like, I know you're amazing at self-editing, and I've known other people in fandom who are also very good at it; there's plenty of published writers who are bad at it. And you quite regularly see really good stylistic experiments in fandom, whereas commercial creative work is inherently more conservative due to the financial risk involved (although obv this is proportional to prospective return on investment, hence why big-budget movies and AAA videogames are mostly boring). But there's other skills that fandom doesn't hone well - the judgement people pass on original characters in fandom is very unhelpful imo. :/

And hey, there's plenty of popular commercial writers who've been accused of playing the same piece for 10+ years, over and over for $10 per rinse-repeat. Definitely not just a fandom thing.

I think a lot depends on what someone wants to get out of their creative side, too. Fandom can be a very fun, supportive environment for someone with a creative hobby, and my impression is that most adults who are involved in fandom explicitly do NOT want a creative career. We have some other professional vocation, or we're not interested in the marketing and self-employment side of things, or we're creatively drawn to types of work that isn't commercially marketable eg. short stories or metacommentary. Most of the adults I know in fandom do both original and fannish work; I know one lady in her 40s who publishes original Kindle novels and does fanfic both for fun and to promote her original work, and I've met several others who have sold original short stories but have no interest in making writing a significant source of household income. Even moderately successful novelists barely earn squat - they've put years of work into doing a very demanding job for relatively little money. I would rather have an easier, more lucrative professional life and just write whatevers for fun, lol.

(Which isn't to say that professionalism and creative development necessarily go together when it comes to original work, but that's the common assumption. I've had several people assume that, because I've told them I write a bit, I must be trying to publish a novel. Hobbyist artists don't seem to get this reaction at ALL - no one assumes that if someone says they like drawing they must be trying to get a gallery exhibition. I knew a creative writing student at college whose first-year roommates always acted standoffish around her and eventually explained that they thought she wanted to be left alone 'to write her novel'; she was studying dramaturgy and doesn't even give a fuck about novels.

also, I forgot to turn my calendar over until now :DAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2511272831266829283.post-2459291425584542652013-02-03T11:25:48.510-08:002013-02-03T11:25:48.510-08:00Is the 'alpha' 'beta' terminology ...Is the 'alpha' 'beta' terminology based on any research on human beings? I've always thought it was a pop-psych thing that's not that useful for discussing human social complexity, where an awful lot of behaviour is purely situational (to the point where some psychologists have theorised that 'personality' does not even exist, because our behaviour seems to be mostly governed by situational realities).

I find, thinking of the places I've lived, it's about instilled social manners; a lot of people (especially women) in the South appeared to have no idea how to deal with a bit of righteous West London aggro, not because they were more 'beta' than me but because their entire cultural conditioning ran against it. Sometimes, this was helpful to me because I could just push for what I wanted; sometimes, it wasn't because people refused to deal with an assertive, firm woman.

I feel like one thing immigration has taught me is how to codeswitch socially and be whoever it's most convenient to be in a given situation; I have two jobs right now, and I'm a trainee at one of them and a supervisor at the other, so obviously the mannerisms I need to use with both clients and with other employees are very different - and in situations where I am the client or customer, I'll need different manners again. So at work I'm often playing at Southern charm; other times it needs more West London righteous aggro. I also think it's legit to decide I would rather put up with a given situation than go through the stress of dealing with it. I'm outta fucks sometimes, not least when I'm not being paid to have fucks, and that's okay.

I had a dear friend in Atlanta who told me about how the "Southern belle complex" as she put it worked; because she's female and has always lived in GA she'd been given that ingrained training to act sweet and deferential towards people who were being dicks to her, eg. angry customers at her job, and then she'd vent hardcore as soon as the difficult person was out of her way - which is something she thought many non-self-aware (ironically, that tended to mean less introverted) women suffering from the belle complex weren't able to do. I really think you're understating the role of social rules here - 'teenyvoice' does not come out of nowhere, especially not in a culture that actively punishes girls for being assertive rather than 'nice' when they're in public.

So I don't think you can write off 'social rules' that easily, given that each social interaction involves two people, one of whom you have absolutely no control over.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2511272831266829283.post-20812565042268241962013-02-01T16:12:30.864-08:002013-02-01T16:12:30.864-08:00processed and unprocessed are weird terminologies....processed and unprocessed are weird terminologies.
